During the first quarter of DRC introduced a ban on importation of a number of items such as; cement, steel, sugar, carbonated drinks, etc. Congo DRC is one of Zambia’s largest export markets and is a major forex earner for the Country. The ban therefore posed a significant risk to the revenue generation efforts of Zambian manufacturers, especially given the noted increase in tariffs imposed by another major export market – Zimbabwe.
ZAM engaged the Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry to address the challenges arising from the importation ban. In this regard, the ban was lifted following interventions from MCTI and the Ministry of Finance (MOF). Additionally, various member companies accompanied the Ministry to DRC on a mission to enhance trade relations between the two countries.
